Rheumatology at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust
Higher Specialty Rheumatology training is delivered across both Maidstone Hospital and the Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury, providing comprehensive experience in Acute and General Internal Medicine alongside the full spectrum of rheumatological conditions. The programme offers exceptional training in ultrasound-guided diagnostics and interventions, as well as management of the complete range of inflammatory arthritides and connective tissue diseases. This dual-site placement ensures trainees develop broad expertise in both general and specialised rheumatology, preparing them for independent consultant practice.
Comprehensive Clinical Experience
The training programme incorporates multiple learning modalities including ward-based clinical teaching, extensive outpatient exposure, theatre attendance, private study time, reflective practice, audit projects, and research support. Education is enhanced through regular formal teaching sessions and challenging ‘hot cases’ discussions, ensuring trainees develop robust clinical reasoning skills. Weekly consultant-led ward rounds provide direct supervision and mentorship, while rotations through the Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) offer valuable opportunities to enhance procedural competencies in an acute setting. This balanced approach ensures development of both specialist rheumatological expertise and core medical skills.
