Internal Medicine Training at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust

Internal Medicine training is delivered across both Maidstone Hospital and the Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury, providing a comprehensive educational experience that supports trainees in achieving core competencies, completing MRCP examinations, and developing specialty interests. The program features structured rotations through mandatory and key specialties, with dedicated pathways for both Stage 1 (IMT1 and IMT2) and Stage 2 (IMY3) training. The Trust’s excellent track record of supporting trainees into their first-choice ST3/4 positions in both Group 1 and Group 2 specialties demonstrates the program’s effectiveness in preparing physicians for the next stage of their careers.

Comprehensive Clinical Experience

The training program ensures extensive exposure to acutely ill patients in well-supported environments while offering opportunities to gain specialised experience in areas of interest. Stage 1 training encompasses six 4-month rotations across mandatory specialties (Geriatrics and Intensive Care Medicine) and major specialties including Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Respiratory Medicine, Stroke Medicine, Acute Medicine, Frailty, Oncology, Haematology, and Diabetes & Endocrinology. For those continuing to Stage 2, the program provides two 6-month rotations with integration into the medical registrar on-call rota as a non-specialty registrar, building essential leadership and clinical management skills.
