Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust is split into 2 sites: Maidstone and The Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury. There are 6 Respiratory Consultants at TW and 3 at MH and the registrars work on 1 of the 2 sites, rotating between the consultants.

Both hospital sites offer a broad range of general Respiratory experience, with EBUS services on the Maidstone site and medical thoracoscopy on the Tunbridge Wells site.

Both sites have use of their own dedicated Respiratory USS and have consultants trained to Level 2 which enables training of the registrars.

There are specialist cancer, bronchiectasis and COPD clinics available.

Training Programme

The Registrar posts are split either on the Maidstone site or The Tunbridge Wells site, but on occasion the registrars may have to cross cover. Currently we have provision for 2 Respiratory SpRs on the Tunbridge Wells site and 1 Respiratory Registrar on the Maidstone site. The other Registrar post on the Maidstone site is currently held by an Acute Medicine Trainee, but we are looking to change this in the future.

The departments offer a broad range of general Respiratory and G (I) M exposure. One Respiratory Consultant on each site is trained to Level 2 in Chest USS so we are able to supervise registrars to obtain Level 1 accreditation and have a dedicated USS machine on each Respiratory ward.

Our lung cancer services have been streamlined and now have dedicated lung cancer clinics on each site. EBUS is offered on the Maidstone site and Medical Thoracoscopy at Tunbridge Wells.

Both sites have an excellent team of Respiratory Nurses and physiotherapists. There is a very active audit programme and we participate in all the National BTS audits. We have just set up a Pulmonary Rehabilitation Course and a new Integrated COPD pathway

Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury:  All the consultants are enthusiastic teachers and keen to attract trainees to the new hospital. There are 2 Bronchoscopy lists a week and regular Respiratory clinics. There is a dedicated Respiratory teaching session on alternate weeks. Ward 21 is the dedicated Respiratory ward where we deliver NIV and have Optiflow.

Maidstone: Offer 2 Bronchoscopy lists (including TBNA and EBUS) a week and outpatients, including a service providing Omalizumab.

Foster Clark Ward is the dedicated Respiratory ward where we deliver NIV and have Optiflow.
