Geriatric Medicine at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust
The Departments of Medicine for the Elderly at Maidstone Hospital and Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury offer comprehensive training opportunities in both General Internal Medicine (GIM) and Geriatric Medicine. Both departments are fully integrated within the Medical Directorate, providing seamless care pathways for elderly patients. A key strength of the programme is its flexibility, allowing training opportunities to be tailored to each trainee’s Personal Development Plan (PDP) needs following consultation with their Educational Supervisor. This personalised approach ensures trainees develop both essential core competencies and specialised skills aligned with their career aspirations.
Comprehensive Elderly Care Services
Both hospital sites deliver a full spectrum of elderly care services, encompassing acute elderly care including acute frailty, specialised stroke services, and rehabilitative care. The stroke service operates a 24-hour thrombolysis pathway, ensuring patients receive timely interventions. Orthogeriatric rehabilitation services provide specialised care for elderly patients following orthopaedic procedures, whilst dedicated stroke rehabilitation services focus on maximising recovery and independence after cerebrovascular events. These clinical services are complemented by intermediate care rehabilitative services, creating a complete care pathway from acute admission through to community reintegration.
