Overview

General Surgery at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells

To maximise experience, Higher Specialty training in General Surgery is carried out across both Maidstone Hospital and the Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury. Maidstone Hospital serves as the centre for elective complex procedures including Colorectal, Gynaecological oncology, Urology and Upper GI surgery, while Tunbridge Wells Hospital functions as a level two trauma centre where all emergency surgery is performed in state-of-the-art facilities. The programme boasts impressive success rates for FRCS III examinations, CCT accreditation and consultant placement.

Subspecialty Training Opportunities The programme features comprehensive subspecialty training across multiple disciplines. Breast training takes place at the Peggy Wood Centre at Maidstone Hospital, a major cancer centre pioneering research into “micro-bubbles” and offering exposure to all aspects of benign and malignant breast disease. Upper GI training covers specialist procedures including minimally invasive oesophageal and gastric resections, complex laparoscopic surgery, and advanced endoscopic techniques. Lower GI training encompasses the full spectrum of colorectal surgery from laparoscopic resections to complex inflammatory bowel disease management, serving as the tertiary referral unit for Kent and East Sussex.
