Paediatrics at Tunbridge Wells and Maidstone
The Paediatric Department has established a strong reputation for teaching and training, providing a supportive and friendly environment aligned with the RCPCH curriculum. All Paediatric inpatient services (both general paediatric and neonatal) are centralised at the Tunbridge Wells Hospital in Pembury, while specialty training involves cross-site working at Maidstone Hospital for Outpatient Clinics and Assessment Unit activities. The department offers comprehensive experience across general paediatrics including wards, routine and specialty outpatients, Short Stay Assessment Units, and A&E, complemented by training in the level 2 neonatal unit and community paediatrics.
Educational Structure and Resources The curriculum encompasses ward-based teaching, formal educational sessions, subspecialty experience, Regional Specialty study days (PLEAT), clinical audit, clinical governance, and academic opportunities. The department is staffed by 11 Paediatric consultants with diverse subspecialty interests, providing comprehensive training in general, neonatal, and specialty Paediatrics. Physical resources include a Neonatal unit with 3 intensive care and 8 high dependency cots, plus separate special care and transitional care units, alongside a General paediatric Unit with 24 in-patient beds and 15 Assessment/Day case spaces.
