Ophthalmology at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells
Specialty Ophthalmology training is primarily based at Maidstone Hospital with occasional attendance required at Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury. The department provides comprehensive surgical services, with inpatient procedures concentrated at Maidstone while day-case services are available at both locations. Training during ST1 and ST2 years combines outpatient clinics and theatre-based experience, focusing on developing specific competencies in cataract surgery, minor eyelid procedures, and laser treatments.
Academic Environment and Schedule The department maintains a standard “9 to 5” timetable Monday through Friday (with earlier 8am starts on operating days) and offers weekly departmental teaching sessions supplemented by quarterly Regional study days, courses, and conferences. The team consists of 14 Ophthalmology Consultants, several actively engaged in research activities, with established academic connections to the University of Kent at Canterbury.
