Histopathology at Maidstone Hospital
Specialty training in Histopathology is available at Maidstone Hospital through an excellent training Department offering a wide range of specialties. The service operates from a purpose-built Cellular Pathology Department that opened in 2011, serving as a central pathology hub for multiple NHS Trusts and specialized cancer centers.
Departmental Structure and Expertise
The specialist department comprises 20 consultants (including locum and fixed-term posts), 2 specialist grade doctors, clinical cytologists, 3 cut-up practitioners, and 2 consultant biomedical scientists, supporting 10 training posts. The department processes specimens from three NHS Trusts (MTW, Dartford and Medway). As the Central Pathology Department for both the Upper GI Cancer Centre for Kent and the West Kent Gynaecological Oncology Centre, the facility delivers comprehensive subspecialty coverage including Upper and Lower GI, Gynaecological, Breast, Urological, Skin, Head and Neck Pathology and Haematopathology. Additionally, there is a Post Mortem service at Tunbridge Wells Hospital, where trainees can receive post mortem training.
