Overview

Emergency Medicine at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust

Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust operates two acute hospital sites with 24-hour Emergency Departments, where Higher Specialty training rotates between locations for six-month periods. As part of the SELKAM trauma network, the Trust holds an official level 2 trauma center designation. The Tunbridge Wells facility features 19 majors bays, 6 resus bays, a 7-bedded CDU, and a large minors area, complemented by a newly established Paediatric A&E, with projected annual attendances of 65,000. Maidstone Hospital serves as a District General Hospital with an on-site regional oncology centre and anticipates 60,000 emergency attendances this year.

Higher Specialty Trainees are expected to take leadership roles in both departments, providing supervision and education to junior staff while supporting the broader Emergency Department team. Consultant presence extends until 10pm on most days, including weekends. The Trust has established an excellent track record in skills development for specialist training completion, with particular strength in FCEM examination preparation and guidance.
