Newly appointed to the role of KSS Locality Dean, Dr Ruth Silverton has taken a non-traditional path through her medical, academic and leadership career.
After completing a BSc in Biology, she studied medicine as a graduate, pursuing alternative routes through Foundation and Core Medical Training to better understand the patient journey and integrate education with clinical practice from an early stage.
Clinically, she has worked in Nephrology for over a decade, beginning in Yorkshire, later moving to London, and most recently Cambridge, where she specialises in Dialysis and Low-Clearance medicine.
As an educationalist, Dr Silverton has delivered undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, assessment and curriculum design for Hull York, UCL and Cambridge medical schools, and has lectured on educational theory for the Health Professions Education MSc at UCL.
Her qualitative research, conducted with NHSE and the Royal College of Physicians, has informed national policy on the F3 phenomenon and the evaluation of the Generalist Skills Programme.
This portfolio career has equipped her with wide-ranging expertise in communication, self-management and matrix working, underpinning her development into a senior leadership role, initially as Associate Dean and now as Locality Dean across Kent, Surrey and Sussex, where she continues to foster a transformational leadership style.
