Urology at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells
The Urology Department operates primarily from Maidstone Hospital, where inpatient activity and surgical procedures are concentrated, while outpatient services and some emergency care are delivered at Tunbridge Wells Hospital in Pembury. Higher Specialty training is predominantly based at Maidstone Hospital, with trainees attending Tunbridge Wells Hospital for on-call commitments and selected outpatient clinics. The programme is designed to provide flexible training experiences tailored to individual needs, interests and training stage.
Clinical Services and Specialisation The department has developed an internationally renowned reputation for Holmium Laser Enucleation of Prostate (HoLEP) procedures, whilst delivering comprehensive surgical services across core urology. These include PCNLs, advanced prostate cancer diagnostics (featuring local anaesthetic transperineal biopsy), prostate brachytherapy, benign upper tract surgery, female and urodynamic urology, and paediatric urology. Although major oncological procedures currently take place at Medway Hospital and Eastbourne District General Hospital, arrangements exist for trainees to accompany consultants to these facilities, providing valuable experience in pelvic surgery and nephrectomy/partial nephrectomy procedures.
