Overview

Haematology at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust

The Department of Haematology operates across both Maidstone Hospital and Tunbridge Wells Hospital in Pembury, providing comprehensive training in clinical general and malignant haematology, blood transfusion, and coagulation. The department consistently receives positive feedback from trainees, who value the unique clinical exposure not typically available during University training. The department’s dedicated trainers have established an exceptional track record for supporting Core Trainees in successfully obtaining Haematology National Training Numbers (NTNs).

Specialist Haematology Services

Patient care is delivered through a consultant-led multidisciplinary approach, with junior staff playing a central role under the supervision of specialist registrars rotating from King’s College Hospital. The department operates a dedicated British Society for Haematology (BSH) level 2 unit featuring filtered isolation rooms for intensive therapy, supported by a team of specialist nurses. Educational opportunities are abundant, with three consultant-led teaching ward rounds weekly, including a multidisciplinary grand round, complemented by a Weekly Journal Club where trainees present the latest research, guidelines, and state-of-the-art management approaches for various haematological conditions.
